THE BELLAMY BROTHERS: THE LOVE STILL FLOWS…
A Unique Path to Success
Howard and David continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that is now celebrating over 40 years of success.
From Pop to Country
The road that started on the pop music charts in the ‘70s took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80s, paving the way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich, and previously—The Judds. Before the road forked into country, the musical journey of the Bellamy Brothers began in Florida before exploding nationally amidst the ’70s pop culture of L.A.
Early Performances and Musical Influences
Their first official gig was in 1968, playing a free show with their father at the Rattlesnake Roundup in San Antonio, Florida. They honed their skills in Black clubs throughout the South, singing backup for artists like Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd, and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Soon after, they moved to Atlanta, where the Allman Brothers were rising stars, immersing themselves in the rock/country scene.
Finding Their Sound in the Age of Aquarius
Amidst the turmoil of the late ’60s and early ’70s, with America in a haze of drugs, civil unrest, and war, The Bellamys’ music adopted a hard-driving edge. David Bellamy’s songwriting flourished during their road gigs, setting the stage for their breakout hit, “Spiders & Snakes.”
Breakthrough with “Spiders & Snakes”
The hit “Spiders & Snakes,” written by David and recorded by Jim Stafford, became a smash, selling over three million units worldwide. This success introduced the brothers to the L.A. music scene, where they connected with legends like Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Van Morrison.
International Success with “Let Your Love Flow”
In 1976, their single “Let Your Love Flow” became an international hit, especially in Germany, where it held the No. 1 spot for over two months. This hit expanded their fan base, leading them to tour with acts like Loggins & Messina, the Doobie Brothers, and the Beach Boys.
Country Music Breakthrough
By the late ‘70s, the Bellamys were making their mark on the country charts with hits like “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” which sparked a series of fourteen U.S. No. 1 singles. Hits like “Dancing Cowboys,” “Sugar Daddy,” and “Redneck Girl” solidified their place in country music.
Pioneering the Duo Category
Howard and David created a lasting impact on country music as a duo. The Bellamy Brothers hold the record in both the ACM and CMA Awards for the most duo nominations. They have also garnered numerous Grammy nods, and internationally, they’ve released more than two dozen hit songs that never reached U.S. markets.
International Appeal
For international audiences, Howard and David have focused on strong melodies to connect with fans. They continue to perform worldwide, with TV specials and collaborations like Blake Shelton’s Friends And Heroes Tour, which introduced their music to a new generation.
Life on the Ranch and “Honky Tonk Ranch”
When not touring, the brothers spend time on their 150-acre family ranch in Darby, Florida. Their reality show, “Honky Tonk Ranch,” documents their lives balancing touring with running the ranch, airing on the Circle Network.
Celebrating Milestones and Recent Projects
For their 40th anniversary, the Bellamys released 40 Years, a two-CD collection of hits and new songs. In 2019, they also released Over the Moon and their first book, Let Your Love Flow – the Life and Times of The Bellamy Brothers. Their 2020 EP, Bucket List, features songs like “Rednecks (Lookin’ for Paychecks)” and “No Country Music For Old Men,” a tribute to Kenny Rogers. They have also partnered with Trulieve for a medical marijuana line, Old Hippie Stash.
