More Than a Name on a Wall: Appreciating Jimmy Fortune

Gospel and country music lovers nationwide (and beyond) sing the praises of singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jimmy Fortune. Fortune’s music is heavily influenced by his faith, and he often uses his music as a medium to spread positivity and hope. He believes that music has the power to heal and bring people together, and this belief is evident in his work. Here’s what you should know about his roots and career—and where to catch a performance by the “Forever” artist.

Early Life and Career With The Statler Brothers

Born Lester James Fortune on March 11, 1955, gospel musician Jimmy Fortune grew up in the small town of Staunton, Virginia. As a teenager, he sang in his high school choir. His parents were both musically inclined and played various instruments, which helped influence Fortune’s decision to pursue music as a career.

Fortune began performing for audiences in a professional capacity in the 1980s. He initially worked as a backup singer for many famous artists, including Vince Gill and Ricky Skaggs. In 1982, he was invited to join the renowned band, The Statler Brothers. Fortune’s contribution to the band was enormous, and he became an integral part of the group. He wrote some of the band’s most famous songs, including “Elizabeth,” “More Than a Name on the Wall,” and “Forever.”

Fortune remained a part of The Statler Brothers for over two decades. In 1983, he wrote the group’s second Number 1 hit, “Elizabeth.” During his time with them, the band won numerous awards and accolades for their contributions to the country music industry. Fortune sang on many of the band’s gold, platinum, and double platinum recordings. In 2002, The Statler Brothers announced their retirement from music, and Fortune decided to pursue a solo career.

Solo Career

After leaving the band, Fortune released his debut solo album, When One Door Closes, in 2003. The album received critical acclaim and featured some of Fortune’s best work. He continued to release several solo albums, including I Believe, Hits & Hymns, and Sings the Classics, which were all well received by audiences. In 2007, Fortune and The Statler Brothers were inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame.
