Houston Things to Do (Before Summer Is Over)

As the summer of 2024 begins to wind down, Houston, Texas, remains vibrant with can’t-miss activities and events. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there are plenty of Houston summer events and activities to enjoy before the season ends.

Late July Through August

  • Summer country music concerts. If you think the best of summer is over, think again. From July 27 through August 24, Houston will be serving up major summer concerts featuring Zach Bryan with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and other well-known country music artists.
  • Indoor sights to beat the heat. If the fiery Houston summer weather has you flinching at the thought of going outside, there are plenty of local things to see and do in the crisp, cold comfort of modern AC. Just a few highlights include Space Center Houston, The Galleria mall, the Downtown Aquarium, and any of the 19 museums, galleries, and cultural centers in the Museum District.

Late July

  • Mosquito Festival. Why complain about mosquitoes when you can attend a party in their honor? From July 25 through 27, check out the one and only family-friendly Great Texas Mosquito Festival in Clute. Keep pesky blues away with live music, children’s activities, barbecue cook-offs, shopping, rides, contests, and, of course, the Mosquito Chase 5K.

August

  • Houston Shakespeare Festival. For some truly dreamy evenings, head to the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park from August 1 through 10 to attend the University of Houston’s Shakespeare Festival, a time-honored annual celebration of Shakespearean favorites. Enjoy free parking in lots C, D, and E, then pull up a patch of grass for an equally cost-free performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet.
  • August Wilson in the Park. For theater enthusiasts, August Wilson in the Park (Emancipation Park, to be exact) is a must-see event. This outdoor experience brings the works of renowned playwright August Wilson to life in a beautiful setting. Scheduled for August 4, this event also offers food trucks and vendors, as well as a DJ and a back-to-school drive.
