Each December, Houston metro area residents find countless ways to celebrate the Christmas season Texas-style. One of the most beloved holiday traditions takes place not in Houston proper, but in the friendly nearby community of Tomball. It’s the annual Tomball German Heritage Festival (often shortened to the Tomball German Festival or Tomball German Fest), which occurs biannually in March and December.
The festival takes place in Tomball’s Old Town area, and it celebrates the first German families to settle in the community, beginning in 1840. Admission and parking are free, and there’s even a free shuttle service to and from select locations.

- Eats and drinks. While you may not find sugarplums per se, you’ll find tasty treats for all your holiday cravings. Enjoy beer, mulled wine, and traditional German foods like Christmas Stollen (bread full of dried fruit and nuts), bratwurst, sauerkraut, and more. If those aren’t your thing, there will be plenty of festive non-German foods as well.
- Fun for kids. If your young ones are in need of some entertainment (and ways to burn off all that extra energy), head for the kids’ area. They’ll definitely be of good cheer when they spot the carnival rides, pony rides, bungee jumping, rock wall, and petting zoo.
- Live performances and contests. No German heritage festival would be complete without a traditional “Oompah” band, and the festival features multiple music stages. You’ll also be regaled with Christmas carols, special contests, and other live music performances.
